P. Gingivalis
Porphyromonas gingivalis is the main cause of gum disease. It is a type of bacteria that lives between the teeth and gums. It secretes enzymes that break down collagen, the substance that makes up gum tissue. It hides between the gums and releases toxins that can cause the gums to swell and bleed.
